Israeli members of parliament on Thursday voted 68 to nine to oppose the formation of a Palestinian state, which it said would “encourage Hamas and its supporters”. The Palestinian Authority said that Israel’s government was “plunging the region into an abyss” and France said the vote was “in contradiction” with UN Security Council resolutions.
