South Korea’s disgraced ex-President Yoon Suk-yeol returned to prison on Thursday as prosecutors investigate accusations of insurrection after he declared martial law last December. He is being held in a solitary cell at the Seoul Detention Center, where he spent 52 days earlier in the year before his release four months ago on technical grounds. The Seoul Central District Court said it approved a second warrant because of concerns Yoon could seek to destroy evidence. What is Yoon accused of? Yoon triggered months of political turmoil in South Korea after declaring martial law in early December, and then sending armed soldiers to parliament…
US President Donald Trump announced new tariffs on 14 countries on Monday night, the majority of them in Asia. He said the tariffs would kick in on August 1 but left the door open for further negotiations, saying the suggested tariffs were “more or less” final offers. “If [countries] call with a different offer, and if I like it, we’ll do it,” he said. Which countries has Trump targeted and why? Among the countries that Trump hit were Japan, South Korea, Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Laos and Myanmar. Analysts say the focus on Asian countries is part of a move by the…
When incoming US president Donald Trump moved to revoke birthright citizenship, stripping people born in the country of their US nationality if their parents are non-citizen immigrants, some saw echoes of Nazi Germany. However Germany, a nation formed in 1871 from diverse independent states, never gave automatic citizenship to those born in the country. Citizenship was ruled by the right of blood, based on the idea that German nationality was inherited, meaning one or two parents had to be German. Yet citizen rights did not depend on race and religion. Some 400,000 Jews in the country, or 80% of the population,…
A jury in Australia has found Erin Patterson guilty on three counts of murder and one of attempted murder. The murder weapon: Toxic mushrooms. Prosecutors argued Patterson intentionally served four of her family members with meal portions containing toxic death cap mushrooms in 2023. Patterson denied being guilty, originally telling police she had used store-bought mushrooms from a supermarket, then an Asian grocer in Melbourne. A search of such stores found no evidence that poisonous mushrooms had ever been sold. During the trial, Patterson said she may have foraged for the mushrooms but could not say for certain where she had obtained the…
For the second game in a row, Lea Schüller was substituted with 20 minutes remaining. This was not a reflection of poor performance but Germany coach Christian Wück’s way of protecting his striker, who had done her job once again. Schüller scored the second, just as she had against Poland in Germany’s opener, to complete a 2-1 comeback against Denmark. Until fairly recently, it has been the Bayern Munich star who was the one coming on. But the retirement of Alexandra Popp last year has made Schüller Germany’s undisputed starting striker.Sjoeke Nüsken scored Germany’s equalizer after a shaky startImage: Frank…
07/08/2025July 8, 2025Netanyahu nominates Trump for Nobel Peace Prize, hails attacks on IranIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Donald Trump on Monday that he was nominating the US president for a Nobel Peace Prize as the pair hailed their recent strikes on Iran’s key nuclear facilities. Netanyahu and Trump sat down with their top aides for a dinner in Washington to mark the Iran operation and discuss a 60-day ceasefire proposal aimed at halting the 21-month conflict in Gaza. “He’s forging peace as we speak, and one country and one region after the other,” Netanyahu said as he presented Trump with a nominating letter, adding that he…
The US Supreme Court on Tuesday handed President Donald Trump yet another victory as the judiciary gave the go-ahead for his administration to pursue the slashing of federal jobs, potentially numbering in the hundreds of thousands. In doing so, the top court in the United States overrode lower court orders that temporarily froze the cuts, carried out by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which was initially headed by billionaire Elon Musk.Trump policies, job cuts spark street protests across USTo view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video What does the ruling mean? US President Donald Trump is doubling down against the BRICS bloc of fast-growing economies, including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, warning that their push to undermine the US dollar’s dominance threatens America’s economic supremacy. Just as BRICS leaders convened in Rio de Janeiro for their annual summit, Trump on Sunday vowed to slap an additional 10% tariff on any nation backing the group’s “anti-American policies,” piling pressure on top of existing and threatened trade levies. The Trump administration’s 90-day pause on higher tariffs is set to expire Wednesday, and letters have been sent to inform dozens of countries of their new US import levy, according to the White…
In just a few days, the palaces of King Ludwig II of Bavaria could be added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. Alongside 31 other sights around the world, Neuschwanstein Castle, Linderhof Palace, the King’s House on Schachen, and the Herrenchiemsee palace complex have been nominated for inclusion. Decisions will be made at the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee in Paris (which ends on 16 July 2025). For ten years now, King Ludwig II’s Bavarian palaces have been at the top of Germany’s wish list for new additions. Perched high above the edge of the Alps, Neuschwanstein…
Did Bayern Munich do well at the Club World Cup? Even though the competition is of little interest to many football fans in Germany, Bayern Munich would still have liked to have won it. As a result, their loss to Paris Saint Germain in the quarterfinals comes as a disappointment, especially as it marks yet another defeat to a top European club. In the Champions League last season, the German champions lost to Aston Villa, Feyenoord and Inter Milan. At the Club World Cup, Bayern lost to Benfica before bowing out to PSG. Although Jamal Musiala’s serious injury against Paris…
