Although Andy Sachs’ most memorable looks in The Devil Wears Prada 2 undoubtedly the spectacular dresses – that patchwork maxi from Gabriela Hearst still haunts us – the real style inspiration may lie in her off-duty wardrobe. Or more specifically: in her favorite one jeans.
Andy Sachs’ jeans
As tempting as each new denim trend is – barrel jeans? Certainly. The return of skinny jeans? We’ll have to think about that some more – classics remain classics for a reason. And few models are as timeless as Andy Sachs’ denim: the light washed vintage Levi’s 501 Original Jeans.
In the film the character of Anne Hathaway the iconic jeans with a double-breasted blazer and boots with a block heel. The legs are casually folded at the ankles, just the way you want. The result? An effortless smart-casual look that feels as practical as it is timeless.
The most timeless jeans from Levi’s
Of course, the superlative 501s have been a denim staple for some time: since 1873 to be precise, when founders Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis patented the rivet process that led to the creation of the first pair of jeans. The high-waisted, straight-leg style revolutionized the workwear industry by providing practical trousers that could be worn day in, day out without restricting the wearer or tearing under stress.
Today, the 501 is still Levi’s best selling jeans – and for good reason. The style flatters almost everyone and the silhouette can be styled both casual and more formal, depending on how you wear it. (For example, a black blazer and red lipstick make for the ultimate French girl-dinner look.)
How do you style light jeans?
Sachs’ light blue wash is a trend-resistant choice that looks just as good with sneakers as it does with a sharp black stiletto, but don’t underestimate the many alternatives that are now available: the dark indigo wash is perfect for a more polished look (try them with a tucked-in matching shirt) and the cream version is ideal for balmy summer days, especially when paired with a white T-shirt and fisherman sandals.
And while we’re talking about the weather – yes, how Dutch – let’s manifest a long, hot summer together so that we can also add the equally iconic 501 shorts to our shopping cart.
