Behind every product in a store is a production process. In the series from needle to wire, FashionUnited talks with an expert about how an everyday item is made. This time: the Italian production team of the Dutch fashion brand Wandler about how the Hortensia Bag is made, the first design of the brand.
The Hortensia Bag is made entirely by hand. Making one Hortensia Bag takes up to eight hours.
Wandler’s Hortensia Bag Making Process
“Every masterpiece starts with the quality of the material,” says a producer from Italy. Wandler uses only Italian calf leather (Vitello), supplied by LWG (Leather Working Group). The leather comes from cattle that have been bred according to the strict EU standards. The veal leather is brought to color especially for Wandler. The colors are also LWG certified.
Leather cutting
“The leather is carefully cut out in various forms. The recognizable round shape of the Hortensia Bag, combined with the characteristic ‘wings’ on the sides, forms the basis of the design.”
Gold film pressed on leather
Then the logo – the text “Wandler” – and the text “Made in Italy” is pressed on the leather with gold film.
Finish with golden hardware
This is followed by the finish with gold-colored metal parts, such as the magnetic flap closure and zippers.
Compiling the parts
“Finally, the loose parts are stitched or glued together by hand.” All edges of the bag are provided with a black lacquer layer by hand.
The end result
The Hortensia Bag is available in two sizes: Medium (895 euros) and Mini (795 euros), and comes in various colors. The bag is equipped with several storage compartments and two wearing options: a short handle and an adjustable shoulder strap.
