U.S. women’s national team captain Lindsay Horan spoke to reporters about the reaction to her comments about U.S. fans’ soccer knowledge. Competitor Released earlier this month.
“First of all, I want to apologize to our fans,” Horan said during a virtual live broadcast ahead of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. “Some of my comments were poorly delivered and that was a huge lesson for me.”

“When I think about our fans, I love them so much. The team loves them so much and I can’t explain how much they mean to us. Every time we go out to practice, every time we go out to a game, you know we’re there for them. You fight,” Holland said. “You’re our inspiration, our motivation, and seeing you wearing our jersey and seeing you screaming our name and chanting Team USA, that’s what we play for and I never want to take that away from you.
“Going on, the soccer culture in the United States is changing and evolving in such a positive way. For me, playing for the U.S. Women’s National Team, the NWSL, and the Portland Thorns, it’s amazing to experience that firsthand. When asked to clarify what she was trying to say with her original comment, Horan responded that she thought “what I meant is not important right now.” She said she was just a “football brain” and enjoyed watching as many football games as possible.
“I love talking about it and the way people talk about Manchester City, Arsenal, old Barcelona,” she said. “That’s what I want people to say about us. I want people to talk about how incredible we are in terms of possession, possession, style of play, technical ability, tactical changes in the game.”
Horan said she apologized because of her feelings and said she wanted to “express how much my fans mean to me personally.”
Speaking about the competition before them – the inaugural W Gold Cup – Horan joked that the goal is “the trophy”.
On a more serious note, she said the team’s main goal is to win, but because of the format and timing of the competition, it’s also perfect preparation for the Olympics. “What we do here really trains us and prepares us mentally for what we might have to deal with in France,” she said. “Every time we play, we get better throughout the game and now we keep adding to what we’re trying to do and how we’re trying to play.”

Horan has emphasized multiple times that she believes every player on the roster needs to be utilized throughout the Gold Cup to help players get some game time and more playing time, and that the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team must make the most of this time leading up to the tournament.
