Donald Trump has renewed calls for his most prominent Republican critic, Liz Cheney, to be jailed over her role in the 2021 investigation of the January 6 Capitol attack by his supporters His behavior is bound to cause further concern. Cheney, who served as vice chair of the Jan. 6 committee and was one of two Republicans on the panel, lost her House seat to Trump-backed challenger Harriet Hagman in 2022. She responded late Sunday, calling her fellow Republican Trump “afraid of the truth.”
Trump has been charged with four felonies, including conspiracy to defraud the United States, for trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The U.S. Supreme Court is considering Trump’s claim that he enjoys absolute immunity from prosecution because he served as president from 2017 to 2021.
Trump also faces accusations of interfering in Georgia’s 2020 election, maintaining government secrets after leaving the Oval Office and illegally covering up hush money payments.
On Sunday, Trump wrote that Cheney should “go to jail along with the other members of the House Select Committee on January 6th,” and he tried to insult the committee in a Truth Society post, calling it a “non-select committee.” ”.
Trump founded Truth after he was temporarily banned from Twitter (now known as X) following the Jan. 6 insurrection.
In another Truth Society post, Trump linked to an article written by Kash Patel, a White House staffer in the Trump administration. In an article published on the right-wing website The Federalist, Patel claimed that Cheney and the committee had “hidden evidence” that “completely exonerates Trump” of any involvement in the Jan. 6 insurrection.
Patel, who served as defense chief of staff under Trump, said in December that his administration would “go after those in the media who reported on Trump’s attempts to stay in power” if the former president was re-elected.
Trump wrote: “She [Cheney] She should be prosecuted for what she did to our country! She illegally destroyed evidence. illusory! ! ! “
