Opposition Mansur Yavas announced that he would retain the mayorship of the Turkish capital, Ankara, in front of a crowd of his supporters following the elections on Sunday evening.
The official belonging to the Republican People’s Party said: “The elections are over, and we will continue to serve Ankara and its six million residents without discrimination,” at a time when the results of the ballot box counting, which is still ongoing, showed that he achieved a very comfortable lead over his main competitor.
Yavas won 58.6% of the votes, compared to 33.5% for his opponent from the country’s ruling Justice and Development Party, after counting 46.4% of the open ballot boxes.
In Istanbul, after more than 71% of ballot boxes were opened, the current mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, who is also from the Republican People’s Party, received 50.4% of the votes compared to 40.9% for his competitor in the Justice and Development Party.
