Director of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that the extent of the destruction inflicted on hospitals in the Gaza Strip is “heartbreaking,” reiterating the demand “to protect hospitals and not attack or militarize them.”
Ghebreyesus added, in a tweet posted on the “X” platform today, Wednesday, “We conducted, with our partners, an assessment of the situation of Al-Shifa Hospital and the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza.”
He stressed: “The process of recovering bodies in Al-Shifa Hospital is still ongoing, health workers are cleaning the emergency department, and the burned beds have been removed. The safety of the remaining building still needs a comprehensive engineering evaluation.”
He continued: “The Indonesian hospital is empty, and reconstruction work is continuing in an attempt to rehabilitate it.”
He added: “We once again call for a ceasefire. The main medicine that people in Gaza need is peace.”
