The Vice President of the European Parliament and candidate for the European Union elections from the ruling German Social Democratic Party, Katerina Barley, said today, Tuesday, in a press interview, that establishing a nuclear umbrella in the European Union to replace the American umbrella may become a topic of discussion at the European level.

“On the way to the European army, this may also become a topic of discussion,” Parly said, in response to a question about whether the European Union needs atomic warheads.
Parly pointed out that Europe’s nuclear deterrent power is now in the hands of NATO.
Parly added, in an interview with the newspaper “Tagesspiegel”, that she believes that “it is still very much in the interest of the Americans to have these nuclear warheads available to the Europeans. But based on Donald Trump’s recent statements, it is not possible to rely on that.”
At the end of last week, former US President Donald Trump said that he “will not prevent Russia from attacking NATO countries if the countries fail to fulfill their financial obligations to the alliance.”
