If you thought there was only one sixth instalment in a genre defining video game franchise that’d be hogging the headlines this month, then we’ve got news for you: the world is wider than Leonida, Florida and Grand Theft Auto VI, friends. In fact, GTA VI isn’t even the sixth instalment in a genre defining video game franchise we’ve been waiting for the longest, either. While GTA V was released a mere 13 years ago, Bethesda’s last trip to Tamriel, 2011’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, is a back-creaking 15 years old. But today, eight years after The Elder Scrolls VI‘s announcement, Bethesda has finally offered an update on its latest epic RPG undertaking. Well, we say update, more a title: Sentinel. Check out the reveal below;
Well there you have it: for the first time in over 30 years (since The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, that is), players can look forward to finally returning to the capital of Hammerfell and the seat of power of major political faction the Forebears. And while this title reveal will come as very little surprise to anyone with a stable internet connection and access to fan forums in recent months, after the best part of a decade of crickets, it’s nice to see Bethesda Game Studios marking its 40th anniversary with something tangible from their long-awaited sixquel — even if it is just a shot of a glowing scroll buried in some CG sand, a quick title reveal, and an ominous quote (from, notably, seemingly five years after the events of Skyrim) about lost futures and victories undone.
Now, at this point in time, we still don’t know when The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel will release. Hell, we don’t even know for sure how it will release just yet. Could it be an Xbox/PC exclusive? Will it get a day-and-date release on PlayStation? Will it hit the former first and the latter later? Dare we ask whether there will be a physical disc, even? But regardless of when it’s coming, where it’s coming, or how it’s coming, we now have tangible evidence of the most important thing: The Elder Scrolls VI is coming. Now we must simply pray none among us takes an arrow to the knee before our return to Tamriel.
