Mark Moran’s email:
Hi Hunter,
I’m going to go against your writers on this one and predict the Niners will beat this one with a field goal. I think Christian McCaffrey’s stellar play, the quality of the ever-underrated Brandon Aiyuk and the versatile Deebo Samuel, and Bu A relatively efficient and error-free performance from Brock Purdy will be enough; it’s hard to bet on Mahomes and Reid, though.
I think the Chiefs’ over-reliance on Travis Kelce could come back to hurt them. With Kadarius Toney out (arguably a plus for Kansas), perhaps a show of strength from MVS can help turn the tables and relieve Kansas star tight end and rookie receiver Rasch Pressure on Rashee Rice? KC has advantages at OL and secondary, but I think the star quality of Trent Williams and Nick Bosa gives SF an advantage outside of the skill positions. However, Jarius Snead and Creed Humphrey might have something to say about that.
As a Panthers fan, I was excited to see CMC and 49ers DC Steve Wilks, two players who have contributed so much to our team, win a ring. Anyway, let’s look forward to a fierce high-scoring game. 24-21 San Francisco.
Have fun!
Some people actually agree with my prediction! I’ve always been a fan of this!
Yes, bad news for Toney, the inconsistent Chiefs receiver is not expected to play in the Super Bowl. Toney has only scored one touchdown this season and has been error-prone all season, including an offsides call against the Buffalo Bills that resulted in a touchdown coming off the backboard.
super bowl quiz
Looking for a way to pass the time before the Super Bowl starts? Why not take a chance and fill out Brian A. Graham’s Super Bowl quiz!
Even though covering the Super Bowl has been my actual job for almost a decade, I, uh, only got 12/22. Maybe it’s time to move on, haha!
Taylor Swift is in the building. The pop star arrived at Allegiant Stadium after performing the last of four shows in Japan on Saturday night, boarding a private jet at Haneda Airport for a flight that spanned nine time zones and the international date line before departing from Quick departure from Los Angeles after landing on Saturday afternoon.
Here, she introduces Ice Spice to Jason Kelce, one of many results we couldn’t have imagined in September.
I feel like I’m proven wrong every time I pick against Patrick Mahomes, so this is probably the right one.
What I’m saying is this: If San Francisco wins, running back Christian McCaffrey is expected to win the MVP.

Cool. Good luck! I’m sure whatever it is, you’ll knock it out of the park.
Is it the Chiefs or the 49ers tonight? I want Shanahan/McCaffrey to win (as a Broncos fan), but Mahomes and Reid are Mahomes and Reid.

It feels like everyone is choosing the chief! This feels weird to me because I sincerely believe that San Francisco is clearly the better team, and assuming Brock Purdy doesn’t have a bad Brock Purdy game, there’s a slight advantage.
Now it seems that this possibility is very high! I just think the Chiefs rely on Mahomes too much and if he has a human game, the Niners could take advantage of that.
This will be a close game. I predict the 49ers will win on a field goal, maybe 49ers 31-28 Chiefs? Please feel free to email (to Hunter.felt.freelance@theguardian.com) or X (@hunterfelt).

The only thing more difficult than winning the Lombardi Trophy is defending it. Only eight teams have ever won back-to-back Super Bowls, and three of them did so within the first decade of the Super Bowl’s existence.
-
Green Bay Packers (1966-67); beat Kansas City and Oakland
-
Miami Dolphins (1972-73); beat Washington State and Minnesota
-
Pittsburgh Steelers (1974-75); beat Minnesota and Dallas
-
Pittsburgh Steelers (1978-79); defeated Dallas and Los Angeles Rams
-
San Francisco 49ers (1988-89); beat Cincinnati and Denver
-
Dallas Cowboys (1992-93) beat Buffalo and Buffalo
-
Denver Broncos (1997-98) beat Green Bay and Atlanta
-
New England Patriots (2003-04) beat Carolina and Philadelphia
Not only can Kansas City join that elite class tonight by beating San Francisco, but the Chiefs could also become the first ever defending champion to win two games as an underdog. Each of the eight previous doubles teams was a betting favorite in one or both games.
Hello, I must go
One thing I’ve learned over the past 12-plus years of covering sports is that it’s better to leave a year too early than a year too late. In that spirit, I must announce that today is my last day writing for The Guardian US.
This is not a decision I make lightly! It’s the most fun job a person could have, especially when writing these instant blogs. You are an amazing audience. However, it was time for me to find something new. I’m not sure what that will be yet, but when it starts out as just something I do for money, I don’t want to dwell on it for too long. It’s time for new blood here, and I know for a fact whoever replaces me is going to do a great job. I will definitely continue to read!
I don’t want it to be all about me; these blogs are about gaming. I just want to make this clear up front. I’ll save the final goodbye for last. We still have many, many hours together until then. I will cherish them all.
Preface
Hello everyone, and welcome to the end of the NFL season. If this feels like a familiar matchup, that’s because we’ve been here before! That was more than four years ago in 2020, when the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31-20. I remember it like it happened yesterday, but only because my memory of yesterday is terrible too!
This 49ers team might be the most complete team in football all season. While the Chiefs have the edge at quarterback, Brock Purdy has a better set of offensive weapons. Even though they fell behind early in the NFC Championship Game to the Detroit Lions, they were still able to put together a perfect second half and pull off an impressive comeback. They can’t afford to fall behind the Chiefs so early, but one suspects they know that.
However, the Chiefs have Patrick Mahomes. There’s a reason Mahomes is the most important player in the league, and he proved it in what may be his most impressive season yet. The Chiefs’ receiving core is depleted, which means he’ll have to shoulder more of the load than he has in past seasons. Facts have proved that he is fully capable of shouldering this burden. Plus, he has tight end Travis Kelce, and he must feel invincible now that he has the biggest pop star on the planet cheering him on.
So it’s a battle between the best team and the best quarterback in the biggest game of the year. Sounds like this would be fun for me. One last time, you can contribute to our live coverage of the NFL this season. If you have an email (and you probably will from 2024), you can send your thoughts to Hunter.felt.freelance@theguardian.com.If you’re still on Twitter or X or whatever name Elon wants you can send them to @hunterfelt. We’ll publish them in today’s coverage.
Super Bowl 58 takes place at Allegiant Stadium in Nevada, pitting the San Francisco 49ers against the Kansas City Chiefs! The game is scheduled to start at 6.30pm ET, but this is the Super Bowl! It won’t start on time! Until then, we will continue to provide updates to keep you informed before the big game begins.
There are still two and a half hours until the game starts Allegiant Stadium was packed.
Hunter will be with you soon, but in the meantime, here are our writers’ predictions for today’s game (49ers fans may not want to read this anymore):
49ers 24-27 Chiefs. This is one of those thoughtful choices. The Niners are a more well-rounded team. The Chiefs have a great defense but no answers as to the specific pressure the Niners offense puts on opponents. But they also have the most talented players on the planet in the most valuable position in the game. This is Mahomes’ choice. The Chiefs shouldn’t be here; they’re a flawed team with the worst offensive unit of Mahomes’ career. But he’s still Mahomes — and it’s hard to compete with the quarterback continuing his dynasty run. Oliver Connolly
49ers 24-30 Chiefs. Purdy played well, but Chiefs D got the better of him in the end. Andrew Lawrence
49ers 14-31 Chiefs. It would be interesting to see the Niners win since they haven’t won a championship this century/millennium and the Chiefs are already a modern dynasty. But it won’t be close: The Niners were lucky enough to beat the Packers, and without a few strokes of luck, they might lose to the Lions. The team’s defense struggled in both games, resulting in games that could have gone either way. The Ravens beat San Francisco on Christmas Day, and the Chiefs will do the same on Sunday. Tom Lutz
49ers 33-28 Chiefs. Heart or head? Well, ego trumps both. The 49ers are my preseason favorite, you have to stick with it, don’t you? (I also have to work hard to salvage the credibility of suggesting the Ravens will miss the playoffs.) Shanahan is going to cook up something truly special to get his first ring. Next year’s trilogy battle will be intense. Graham Sayles
