Shein intensifies the number of product safety tests, the company reports in a press release. It seems to be a direct response to the criticism that the EU previously expressed on the Chinese e-tailer. The EU reported that SHEIN violates consumer rights in the field of product safety, among other things.
The Chinese Gigant now reports that this year it wants to perform 2.5 million product safety tests. This is an increase of 25 percent compared to last year. Shein allocates $ 14 million for this. In addition, it reports that it cooperates with 15 ‘internationally recognized product test agencies’ including Bureau Veritas, Intertek, Qima, SGS and Tüv Süd.
Exactly how much products offer is not reported by the e-tailer, but the BBC estimates the number of different products available in one day around 600,000.
Shein indicates that it works with an ‘approved fabric library’. This is a database with materials that have been approved by the e-tailer and can therefore be used by the designers of the company. Before materials are included in the library, they must meet various criteria and standards, according to the message. Since April 2025, fabrics used for children’s clothing must be tested for chemicals and flammability.
The European Commission and various national watchdogs of EU Member States called for SHEIN at the beginning of this week to respect the laws on consumer protection. Research by the Consumer Protection Cooperation showed that various laws are being violated. If the abuses would not be tackled, then National Waakdogs Shein can impose a fine to enforce compliance with the laws. Shein now seems to want to be ahead of any fines with this statement about the extra quality controls.
