LOUISVILLE, Ky. — World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler was arrested by Louisville police on Friday and charged with second-degree assault after driving into Valhalla Golf Club. Assaulted police, was released three hours later, and arrived at the course at 9 a.m.: 12 a.m., less than an hour before he played in the second round of the PGA Championship at 10:08 a.m.
Traffic at the stadium was thrown into chaos after a crash resulted in the death of a pedestrian. ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, who witnessed Scheffler’s arrest, reported that Scheffler was trying to get around traffic when an officer told him to stop.
ESPN reported that Scheffler attempted to gain another 10-20 yards. When he stopped, an officer asked Scheffler to get out of the car. Darlington reported that police opened the door, handcuffed the 27-year-old man and placed him in the back seat of the squad car. The video shows Scheffler in handcuffs and being escorted by two police officers.
Scheffler was booked at 7:28 a.m. and charged with second-degree assault on a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and ignoring a traffic signal from a police officer directing traffic.
Scheffler’s original kickoff time was 8:48 a.m. All kickoff times were pushed back an hour and 20 minutes due to Friday morning’s death, pushing Scheffler’s kickoff time to 10:08 a.m. ESPN then announced the 8:00 a.m. :38 Reports say Scheffler was released and headed to the course.
