Olivia Colman has criticized the gender pay gap in the film industry and said she would have been paid more if she were a man, which she believes is rooted in outdated notions of male actors attracting audiences.
The Oscar-winning actor said her gender limited her earning potential while discussing her latest film, “Wicked Little Letter.” “research shows [women have] It’s always been a box office hit,” she told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour.
“Don’t get me started on the salary disparity, but male actors are paid more because they used to say they could attract audiences, but in reality, that hasn’t been the case for decades. But they still like to use it as a way to not pay women as much. Reasons for higher wages.
“I know full well that if I were Oliver Coleman, I would make a lot more money than I do now,” Coleman added. “I know of a pay gap that’s 12,000 percent. Do the math.”
She did not confirm the production involved in the discrepancy.
This isn’t the first time Coleman has pointed out gender differences while promoting Wicked Little Letters.
Coleman told the Radio Times last month that there was still a gender double standard when it came to obscenity.
“If a woman talks dirty, people act shocked. Get lost! Women are people too – funny, dirty, loving, caring – just like men.”
“Wicked Little Letter” tells the true story of the 1923 Littlehampton poison pen scandal, starring Colman as the prim Edith Swann.
It’s the latest film from the actor known for playing Queen Elizabeth II in “The Crown” and “The Favourite,” in which she plays 18th-century monarch Anne.
Colman won the Academy Award for Best Actress for “The Favourite.” In 2022, she was nominated for a second time in the same award for her role in “Lost Daughter” with “Wicked Little Letters” co-star Jessie Buckley. Colman is also nominated for a 2021 Supporting Actress nomination for “The Father.”
This month, Forbes named Adam Sandler the highest-paid actor of 2023, earning $73 million following the success of his 2023 Netflix film Murder Mystery 2 and his stand-up comedy tour (£57.3 million) in revenue.
Margot Robbie was the second-highest earner, earning $59 million from her role in the Barbie blockbuster movie, which she also produced, but was the only one to make the top 10. That woman is Jennifer Aniston, Sandler’s co-star in the comedy. .
