Taiwan concluded Taipei Fashion Week yesterday, the country’s attempt to contribute to the global fashion landscape while also showcasing its own local talent. Now that the bulk of fashion week’s events are over, we can look back at some of the standout looks from those in attendance, providing an overview of trends dominating the local market, far away from the catwalk spotlight.
Office goths
Shirts, ties and suits are no longer reserved for the office. In Taipei, traditional formal wear was completely transformed with a ‘gothic’ twist. Abundant accessories were spotted in a series of mostly black outfits, ranging from necklaces and chunky platform shoes to handmade embellishments adorning personalized layers. Corsets and belts added to the overall aesthetic, with layering reshaping recognizable garments.
Pants on pants
Layering pants has become a staple on the streets of international fashion weeks, and Taipei was no different. The trouser-on-pants trend captured the hearts of the public. The variations in this style were extensive. Some opted for a double denim look, with the top layer appearing more distressed to create depth, while others combined sportswear with tailoring for a mix of styles.
Composite skirts
The experiments with layering in outfits continued in skirts. Maxi skirts in particular were given a significant upgrade through patchwork techniques, which seemed to stem from the wearer’s personal creativity. Men also joined in on the trend, some layering over their statement skirts such as a blazer in an unexpected way, while others created new shapes using buttons to achieve an asymmetrical effect.
American sportswear
Is it time for the football shirt to make way? The guests at Taipei Fashion Week seem so. Instead of the sportswear that had a strong grip on the fashion world last year, visitors opted for American sports, especially American football. Jerseys of this popular sport took over their more global counterparts and were worn with unexpected additions such as camo shorts, cravats and tailored shirts.
Small scarves
Despite the humidity of Taipei’s urban jungle, visitors remained faithful to using accessories. One accessory that proved essential in bringing an outfit together was the small, yet striking, scarf. Whether worn as a frivolous bow or thrown casually over the shoulder, many embraced the subtle drama this item could add.
