Minister of Trade, Athir Dawood Al-Ghariri, stressed the importance of holding the joint Iraqi-Somali committee.
A statement by the Ministry of Trade received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) stated that “in the framework of implementing the directives of the Prime Minister, Minister of Trade Athir Dawood Al-Ghariri met with Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia Hamza Abdi Barre and his accompanying delegation at the Government Guest House in Baghdad, in the presence of Minister of Agriculture Abbas Jabr Al-Maliki.”
He added, “During the meeting, ways to enhance trade cooperation between Iraq and Somalia, cooperation in the field of importing livestock, and activating the economic and trade agreement signed between the two countries in 1971 were discussed.”
Minister Al-Ghariri stressed, “The Iraqi government’s keenness to strengthen its relations with sisterly and friendly countries, including the Federal Republic of Somalia, and to expand inter-trade between them in a manner that serves mutual interests.”
During the meeting, the Minister pointed out “the importance of holding the joint Iraqi-Somali committee, which has not been held since 1974, and activating cooperation in the field of exporting Iraqi products, such as dates and agricultural products, to Somalia.”
For his part, the Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Hamza Abdi Barre, stressed his country’s keenness to strengthen economic relations with Iraq in various fields, and to open new channels for joint cooperation in a way that achieves mutual benefits.
At the end of the meeting, “the two sides agreed that the Ministers of Trade and Agriculture, accompanied by a group of businessmen, would visit Somalia to strengthen these ties and develop trade relations between the two countries.”
The meeting was attended by the Director General of the Department of Foreign Economic Relations, Riyadh Fakher Al-Hashemi, from the Ministry of Commerce, and the Director General of the General Company for Grain Trade, Dr. Haider Al-Karawi.
