The director Michael Mann was taken to hospital on Saturday after sustaining a superficial injury when he accidentally shot himself at a Los Angeles gun range.
According to reports the director, 83, was hurt in the leg when his holstered weapon discharged at The Range LA in the afternoon. Mann is said to be an experienced target shooter.
He is expected to begin production in January on the sequel to his 1995 crime thriller classic Heat. The new film will reportedly star Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale and is based on the book Heat 2 co-authored by Mann and Meg Gardiner.
The new story is a prequel and a sequel to events in Mann’s earlier feature about obsessive bank robber Neil McCauley, played by Robert De Niro, and his nemesis and detective Vincent Hanna, portrayed by Al Pacino.
The new film will explore both men’s early lives, and pick up on what happened to McCauley’s protegé Chris Shiherlis after Heat’s climactic bank robbery. Shiherlis was played in the original by the late Val Kilmer.
