Kate Middleton honor princess diana but she loves her outfits, but there is one fashion favorite of her late mother-in-law’s that the Princess of Wales would never, ever wear.
This is Princess Diana’s look that Kate Middleton would never wear
We’ve seen Kate Middleton rock quite a few outfits over the years that reference her mother-in-law Princess Diana. Think of the sapphire engagement ring that was once hers, but also the white polka-dot look with matching hat and more recently the purple dress at Wimbledon – a nod to Diana who wore the same colour when she took Prince William to a Wimbledon match in 1991.
There is one fashion go-to of Diana’s that Kate would never adopt, however, and that is wearing black. Yes, Kate has worn black on several occasions, but only when it was protocol, such as in mourning or at a funeral. Diana also stuck to that rule at first. Designer Zandra Rhodes, who created several outfits for the princess, says that Diana loved black, but that she had Rhodes’ black items made in other colors. “She was very shy. She would come into my store in Mayfair and go through the racks,” the designer tells Saga Magazine. ‘Sometimes she would pick something in black, which royals weren’t allowed to wear except at funerals, so we would make it in her size and in a different color.’
Diana began to break protocol and made it one of her go-to colors. In 1981, Diana wore a dress made by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, who would later design her wedding dress. Then Prince Charles was anything but happy with her choice of clothing. “Only people in mourning wear black!”, Charles is said to have shouted at her, Diana says during the interview for her biography ten years later. Diana would then continue to break the rules, culminating in the infamous revenge dress which she wore the night Charles confessed to cheating on her with Camilla Parker Bowles.
