1960s – He joined the Baath Party while studying at the College of Medicine in Baghdad.
The seventies – He was responsible for Baath organizations in Europe when he broke away from Saddam Hussein’s regime and went into exile in London.
1978 – Surviving an assassination attempt by Hussein’s supporters. He was beaten with an ax and hospitalized for about a year.
1991- He co-founded the Iraqi National Accord, a group opposed to Saddam’s Baath Party.
April 2003 – He returns to Iraq when Baghdad falls to coalition forces.
October 2003 – He holds the rotating presidency of the Iraqi Governing Council.
April 2004 – He resigns from the Security Committee of the Iraqi Governing Council when the coalition refuses to grant the committee authority to deal with security issues in Iraq.
May 28, 2004 – The Iraqi Governing Council unanimously chose him to be the interim Prime Minister of Iraq after the handover of power.
June 28, 2004 – He was sworn in as interim Prime Minister of Iraq. He is the first ruler other than Hussein to lead the country in more than three decades.
September 23, 2004 – He holds a press conference with US President George Bush at the White House.
December 16, 2004 – Allawi announces his list of 240 candidates for the Iraqi National Assembly and says that security and national unity will be the top priorities of his list. He rejects the opportunity to run on the ticket designated by Grand Ayatollah Al-Sistani.
April 2005 – He steps down as interim Prime Minister.
July 2008 – Testifying before the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq.
March 26, 2010 – Iraqi officials issue the election results, which confirm that the Iraqiya coalition led by Allawi won the largest number of seats in Parliament.
September 8, 2014 – Iraqi lawmakers agreed to form a new government, with Allawi one of the country’s three vice presidents. These positions, considered redundant and part of bloated government, were struck down in August 2015 and restored by the Federal Court in October 2016.
December 2017 – In response to US President Donald Trump’s call to move the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, Allawi called on the United Nations to intervene, considering that the move would hinder the US role in the peace process.
29 November 2019 – After Abdul Mahdi announced his resignation from the position of Prime Minister, Allawi called for the formation of a “caretaker government” to prepare for transparent elections.
