Irish pair Rory McIlroy and Sean Lowry win the Zurich New Orleans Classic in a playoff.
At the end of the fourth round, Lowry took advantage of McIlroy’s brilliant chip on the 18th green, sinking a birdie putt to extend the match with Martin Traynor at TPC Louisiana. Trainer ) and Chad Ramey shot 25 under.
The American pair were among the first to tee off and topped the leaderboard with a 63 that included seven birdies on the back nine, but waited to see if their score could hold up. Nearly three hours, which meant they were in the second round.
The trainer failed to reach the green after Ramey pulled his second shot left onto the road.
That gave Ryder Cup teammates McIlroy and Lowry the advantage, although the latter found sand on his second shot and needed a trainer’s close call after Lowry missed a putt for par. Missed his own putt to confirm their victory – McIlroy’s 25th career PGA Tour victory.
“It’s absolutely amazing,” McIlroy said on CBS Sports. “We had a great week in New Orleans. The crowd was absolutely amazing and the support we had there. We had a lot of fun doing it and winning in the end was a bonus. There’s no draw.” It’s better to do this with this person.
Lowry added: “It was awesome. It felt very needed. Coming into this week, we felt like we could make a huge jump in the FedEx Cup and get 400 points apiece, and that’s what we did.”
“I felt a little bad carrying them because Rory was holding me, but I carried them.”
