Undisputed new heavyweight world champion Oxandr Usyk burst into tears but shrugged off fears he may have a broken jaw as he reflected on his stunning win over Tyson Fury in Riyadh . After being taken to a local hospital for a routine MRI scan, which cleared him in good health, Usyk returned to Kingdom Arena, where he defeated Fury via split decision.
Usyk spoke freely and without any apparent pain confirmed that he only needed four stitches to close a small cut above his eye. After the game, Usyk was still in the ring and he immediately said: “Thank you so much to my team. This is a huge opportunity for my family, for me, for my country. It’s a great day.
Usyk later paid an interesting tribute to his coaches, saying they had put so much pressure on him over the past nine months. Thinking of the moment he won all four world heavyweight titles, he added: “I’ve been planning this since 2008. It’s not for me. It’s for my God, my supporters, me country, Ukrainian soldiers, Ukrainian mother and father, children.
“But now I want to go home, I want to rest, have some rest,” he said. “I want to eat, sleep, and kiss my wife.”
Fury spoke to reporters as Usyk was examined by doctors. The deposed WBC champion had the marks of the hard-fought fight on his face and made his comments immediately after the fight when he suggested Usyk had been given the wrong favor by the referee.
In the ring, Fury said of Usyk: “His country is at war. So people will side with a country whose country is at war. I won that fight.
Fury was more conciliatory at the press conference. “It’s a close fight,” he said. “I thought I did enough, but I’m not the judge.”
His promoter Frank Warren stressed that Fury’s previous comments should not be taken out of context as they were made shortly after the fight when he was still emotional.
Fury, like Usyk, is most interested in returning to his family. He will likely opt for a rematch, possibly in October, but shrugged: “I don’t know what will happen.”
