The Finnish Minister of Foreign Trade and Development said on Friday that his country will resume providing funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
In turn, Portugal said on Thursday that it would provide ten million euros ($10.89 million) to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in a one-time contribution aimed at providing food, medicine and humanitarian aid to the Palestinians.
Portugal, which has not stopped its funding, contributed four million euros to UNRWA in 2023, and in February this year announced additional assistance to the agency worth one million euros.
On Thursday, the US Congress unveiled a draft law prohibiting any new direct funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), which Israel accuses of having links with the Hamas movement.
There has been controversy surrounding UNRWA since, at the end of January, Israel accused 12 of the agency’s approximately 13,000 employees in Gaza of involvement in the Hamas attack on Israeli territory on October 7.
Following the accusations, 15 countries, most notably the United States, suspended the equivalent of more than half of the funds received by UNRWA in 2023. Since then, several countries have resumed disbursing their contributions.
