It’s official: Radio Silence duo Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin’s hotly anticipated The Mummy legacy sequel is less than a year away! And with filming well underway on the long-awaited return of Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz’s adventuring spouses Rick and Evelyn O’Connell, Universal Pictures has taken to its socials to reveal the title of Radio Silence’s latest franchise revival. Introducing… *drum roll* The Mummy: Book Of The Dead. Now there’s a loaded title — and you can see the official treatment below;
For those who may be seeing that title and thinking ‘The Book of the Dead’ rings a bell, that’d probably be because it’s the very important, ancient, obsidian spellbook that brings the dead back to life and summons the mythic Warriors of the Book in the franchise. And while we don’t know anything about the plot of Book Of The Dead at this exact moment in time, we do know that it brought back the franchise’s titular mummy, Imhotep, in both 1999’s The Mummy and its 2001 sequel, The Mummy Returns. So, with this legacy sequel eliding Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor‘s existence and bringing back the franchise’s OGs — including Oded Fehr’s dashing, Imhotep-halting warrior Ardeth Bay — it seems a reasonably safe bet that some unsuspecting/suspect soul might’ve found the book and brought back yer mummified man Imhotep once again in the new movie.
Rocking a script from The Family Plan scribe David Coggeshall, The Mummy: Book Of The Dead is set to see the above-mentioned Fraser, Weisz, and Fehr return to our screens along with fellow franchise veterans John Hannah and Kevin J. O’Connor, joined by Obsession star Michael Johnston in an as-yet-undisclosed role. And with directors Gillett and Bettinelli-Olpin having previously told Empire that screenwriter Coggeshall has turned in “a very beautiful and sweeping and scary and fun” script, anticipation for The Mummy‘s return only grows greater by the day. We can’t wait to unwrap the blockbuster sequel’s secrets when Book Of The Dead hits cinemas on October 15, 2027. Less than a year to go!
