Bargain holidays Black Friday and Cyber Monday are coming again. This year they fall on November 29 and December 2. Although the popularity has been growing in the Netherlands for years, a survey by ABN Amro now shows that half of respondents believe that the shopping days lead to unnecessary overconsumption.
Not only does this group see it as unnecessary overconsumption, they also see Black Friday and Cyber Monday as having a negative impact on the environment and society. The head and the heart sometimes say something different, because four in ten from this group indicate that they will buy something on the discount holidays.
Of the group that is critical of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, more than three in ten believe that the days offer a good opportunity for people who would otherwise be unable to afford something or would be less able to afford it.
The research was conducted by Q&A Retail on behalf of ABN Amro. The survey had a total of 2099 respondents, divided into five age categories.
