Laughs and an appreciation of Rick Moranis were plentiful as Amazon MGM’s Spaceballs: The New One, a sequel to the 1987 Mel Brooks Star Wars parody, flew into San Diego Comic-Con’s cavernous Hall H Friday afternoon. In the early 2010s, Seth Green and Matthew Senreich made a Star Wars animated parody series titled Detours. It never aired, and when the Walt Disney Co. bought Lucasfilm in 2012, it was feared the show would never be seen again. A crime feature starring Tiffany Haddish is set to make a splash in theaters. Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired The Girl in the River and will release the thriller in theaters and on digital platforms Sept. 4, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Japanese director Miwa Nishikawa’s Children Untold, about a 12-year-old girl disguised as a boy to survive post-World War II in Tokyo, will open the 2026 Platform competition at the Toronto Film Festival. Ami Koyae, Fumi Nikaido and Koji Yakusho star in the Japanese drama based on Nishikawa’s own unpublished novel. Winners of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts’ 22nd BAFTA Student Awards include young filmmakers from Spain, France, China and the United States, it was revealed at a ceremony in Los Angeles on Friday night that was hosted by TV host Elle Osili Wood and featured presenters such as actor/producer Asif Ali, actor/writer Wil Wheaton, immersive artist Gina Kim and film executives Kathryn Busby and Niels Swinkels. On May 1, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced a major change to the eligibility rules for the best international feature film. Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey sets sail on its box office voyage as the star-studded retelling of the classical mythological tale aims to get moviegoers back in the saddle after a recent stretch of underperforming debuts. Danny Boyle‘s Ink, a drama about Rupert Murdoch’s rise to media power in the world of the U.K. tabloids, will open this year’s Venice Film Festival. Ink will have its world premiere in competition in Venice, opening the 83rd festival on Sept. 2. Guy Pearce stars as Murdoch in the biographical drama, from playwright James Graham, who adapted his Tony-nominated play of the same name for the screen.
