Russia on Thursday vetoed the extension of a UN panel tasked with overseeing sanctions against North Korea, amid allegation of its arms exchanges with Pyongyang to sustain the war in Ukraine. Before the vote, Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told the Council that Western countries are attempting to “strangle” North Korea, arguing that sanctions are becoming irrelevant and ineffective in curbing the country’s nuclear weapons proliferation. North Korea has been under Security Council sanctions over its nuclear program since 2006. The UN monitoring panel had been a key instrument in monitoring sanctions compliance and identifying violations. Without the extension its mandate is…
Friday marks one year since Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was arrested in Russia on espionage charges. Last year, upon his arrest while on a reporting trip to the Ural Mountains city of Yekaterinburg, Russia’s FSB security agency said he was accused of gathering information on “the activities of one of the enterprises of the military-defense complex” in Russia “for the American side.” Russian authorities did not reveal any details of the charges or provide evidence. Gershkovich, the WSJ and the US government all deny the allegations. On Tuesday, US Ambassador to Russia Lynne Tracy called the accusations “categorically…

Israeli airstrikes on Syria’s Aleppo killed 36 people, including members of the Lebanese group Hezbollah, sources said on Friday. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring group, said “at least 36 soldiers were killed and dozens wounded” in the Israeli air raid targeting an area near Hezbollah’s rockets storage facilities. The targeted area is located close to Aleppo’s international airport. Earlier, the Syrian Defense Ministry said the Israeli airstrikes and militant attacks around Aleppo resulted in the death of civilians and military personnel. The ministry reported that the Israeli airstrikes coincided with drone attacks launched from Idlib and western…

Polish authorities said on Thursday that they had carried out searches in connection with a suspected Russian spy network in Poland, following intelligence provided by the Czech Republic. “Actions aimed at organizing pro-Russian initiatives and media campaigns in EU countries have been documented,” Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW) said in a statement. The operation was carried out with support and coordination from other European partners, especially the Czech Republic which said on Wednesday it had busted a Moscow-financed network. What was the goal of the Russian spy network? ABW spokesperson Jack Dobzynski said that the network’s “goal was to implement the Kremlin’s…
The United Nations’s top court, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), on Thursday ordered Israel to take all measures to address Gaza’s humanitarian crisis, including opening more land crossings to allow desperately needed aid into the Palestinian territory. “Palestinians in Gaza are no longer facing only a risk of famine, but…famine is setting in,” the Hague-based court said. The new measures were requested as part of an ongoing case brought by South Africa, which asked the ICJ to consider whether Israel is committing genocide in its military campaign launched in Gaza after the October 7 terror attacks by Hamas militants. The…
