France’s fast-fashion bill was recently voted through unanimously in the lower house of Parliament, creating a rare consensus in the National Assembly, where the government lacks an absolute majority and often faces stiff opposition. But that unanimity doesn’t mean everybody in France has welcomed the government’s method. The new rules will affect companies that roll out a certain minimum number of products per day — a threshold to be defined later on by decree. The government is targeting fast-fashion giants like manufacturer Shein and online platform Temu, both based in China. Ultra-fast fashion firms like Shein are putting around 7,200 new items on the market…
This week, Rwandans are marking the 30th anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsi in which Hutu militias killed more than a million people in 1994. Beginning on April 7, 1994, extremist Hutus murdered more than a million Tutsi minorities as well as fellow Hutus, who refused to participate in the slaughter or who chose to protect their Tutsi neighbors. Now, survivors and perpetrators of the genocide are coming together to commemorate and reflect on a crime against humanity that rocked a nation, and indeed the world. How the Rwandan genocide unfoldedTo view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web…
“The Hardest Geezer” has revealed the scariest moment from his gruelling 352-day run across the whole length of Africa. In a news conference, Russ Cook said that – out of the 16 countries he visited during his 9,941-mile journey – he was most afraid “in the Congo on the back of a motorbike, thinking I was about to die”. He had gone missing and was separated from his supporters for days in the jungle, but was eventually freed after villagers armed with machetes were paid off.Meanwhile, in Angola, he and his team were robbed at gunpoint – with cameras, phones and…
Food allergies for children can be a nightmare — every school meal or birthday party could be a potential health risk. The stress and anxiety it causes to children and their parents can have a huge impact on a family’s everyday social life and their ability to plan trips and parties. Researchers have now created the first-ever standardized guidelines to help families build up their child’s tolerance to common food allergens over time. The therapy, called oral immunotherapy, involves giving very small amounts of an allergen, like peanuts, to children and gradually increasing the amount over time to build up…
Historically, accepting a call up to join the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) has meant far more than agreeing to play football for your home country. Donning a USWNT jersey has meant standing for and speaking up for the rights of minorities, be it women’s rights, ethnic minorities right or the rights of those within the LGBTQ+ community. However, as the furor surrounding the decision by Korbin Albert, a player for the US national women’s football team, to repost homophobic and transphobic content on social media has shown, the emerging generation is diverging from the principles and standards laid by those who have…
04/08/2024April 8, 2024Zelenskyy says stalled US aid could mean defeat for UkraineUkraine’s allies must step up support and provide proper air defenses, as Kyiv fends off Russian forces in several flashpoints, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. In his nightly address on Sunday, Zelenskyy said the world must “finally hear” the pain inflicted on Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, which has been subject to a recent wave of attacks and bombings. “It is quite obvious that our existing air defense capabilities in Ukraine are not sufficient and it is obvious to our partners,” Zelenskyy said. Earlier on Sunday, the president warned during…
A contender to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban brought tens of thousands of people onto the streets of downtown Budapest on Saturday. Peter Magyar, who until recently had close links to the government, launched a political movement in February that seeks to dethrone the populist leader after 14 years in power. Magyar, a lawyer who used to be married to Orban’s former justice minister, recently alleged entrenched corruption and cronyism among Hungary’s leaders. What happened at the protests? Protesters marched to the parliament building, some of them shouting: “We are not scared” and “Orban resign!” Many wore the red-white-green national colors or waved the…
Hundreds of people have been rescued amid flooding in New South Wales, Australia.Authorities said 152 people had been rescued after torrential rains sparked warnings for residents to move to higher ground. They said 72 rescues were undertaken in Sydney, Australia’s largest city, where there were hazardous deluges in several of the state capital’s low-lying suburbs.Officials had said Warragamba Dam, which supplies 80% of Sydney’s water supply and was at around 96% of capacity, could spill over on Monday – but there were reports the rain had caused it to spill two days earlier than expected. The bookies had put their money on British singer Olivia Newton-John. She was already a star at the time and the clear favorite. Singer Gigliola Cinquetti, who had already lifted the trophy for Italy in 1964, was also given good odds. But Sweden? The country had never won the competition before, and nobody believed it would. The band ABBA was unknown outside their home country. Their previous attempt to win Eurovision the year before with the song “Ring Ring” was thwarted when they failed to advance past the preliminary round. But in 1974, the stars aligned for them: At the…
Two weeks ago, Darmstadt and Iceland midfielder Victor Palsson gave an emotional interview. The 29-year-old talked about grief after the death of his mother, including crying in front of his 3-year-old son and losing 8 kilos (17.6 pounds) during what he described as a dark time. Palsson’s readiness to talk openly about topics that are rarely public knowledge in football speaks to the tools he has developed and how much more open the world is becoming about mental health. The question is: has professional football done just as much development as he has? “In professional sport, it is often stated that it’s important to always…
