Two Venezuelan activists were shot and injured in the Colombian capital Bogota on Monday in what local authorities suspect was a targeted, hitman-style attack. Yendri Velasquez, a human rights and LGBTQ+ activist, and Luis Peche, a political analyst, were exiting a building in the north of Bogota when two unidentified gunmen opened fire at around midday. Economists from the US, Canada and France were awarded this year’s Nobel Memorial Prize in economics on Monday, the final award of this year’s Nobel week. Joel Mokyr, Philippe Aghion and Peter Howitt won the prize for “having explained innovation-driven economic growth”, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said. Aid for people in Gaza must begin quickly, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said in Paris on Thursday. “We are ready to provide humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip immediately,” he said at the hastily convened conference of several foreign ministers from European and Arab states. Severe flooding and landslides caused by heavy rainfall in southeastern Mexico have left at least 41 people dead, local authorities said on Saturday. Mexico’s government said in a statement that 15 were killed in Veracruz, 9 in Puebla, 16 in Hidalgo, and one in Queretaro, while a search for 27 missing people was underway. The country’s Security Ministry said that 117 cities and municipalities in five states have been heavily impacted.
