Three years ago, Google set an ambitious plan to address climate change by going “net zero”, meaning it would release no more climate-changing gases into the air than it removes, by 2030. But a report from the company on Tuesday showed it is nowhere near meeting that goal. Rather than declining, its emissions grew 13 percent in 2023 over the year before. Compared with its baseline year of 2019, emissions have soared 48 percent. Google cited artificial intelligence and the demand it puts on data centres, which require massive amounts of electricity, for last year’s growth. Making that electricity by…

After 14 years of a Conservative Party government in the United Kingdom, far more people are waiting to access medical care, and for longer. The hospital where Sabha and Khan were stationed was also feeling a strain. Though it was designed for 200 people, it housed more than 10,000, according to Sabha. Many patients were suffering from severe injuries. Others faced amputations. Few had anywhere else to go. Sabha recalled that there was only “one bathroom for every 200 to 300 people”. Doctors, meanwhile, had to improvise emergency room (ER) settings. “When patients come into the ER, they don’t have a bed for them. They’re seeing them on the ground,” Sabha said. “In that hospital hallway, you’re always jumping over someone’s leg, over a…

As the United Kingdom gears up for a general election on Thursday, one issue has emerged at the forefront of voters’ minds – the state of the economy. Since the ruling Conservative Party entered office 14 years ago, the UK’s economy has slowed dramatically. The slowdown is particularly stark when immigration-driven population growth is accounted for and the period before the start of the global financial crisis is included. Gross domestic product (GDP) per capita grew just 4.3 percent from 2007 to 2023, compared with 46 percent growth over the previous 16 years, according to research released earlier this month…
