Prime minister pushes for recognition of a Palestinian state, says such a ‘just’ move would be in European Union’s interest.Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has called Israel’s “disproportionate response” in its war on Gaza a regional and global threat and says the recognition of a Palestinian state is in Europe’s “geopolitical interests”. “The international community cannot help the Palestinian state if it does not recognise its existence,” he told members of parliament on Wednesday, adding that such a move was “just” and “what’s demanded by the social majority”. Sanchez has long pushed for the European Union to recognise Palestine, long…

Singapore – One of the world’s most open economies is attempting a delicate balancing act. On the one hand, the Southeast Asian city-state wants to lure the world’s best and brightest to bolster its workforce, one of Asia’s most diverse. On the other hand, it has to assure locals competing with foreigners for jobs that the system works for them, too, nipping potential resentment or xenophobia in the bud. From next year, the government will tweak that calculus in favour of locals by raising the salary threshold for foreigners seeking approval to work in the city-state. Throughout Israel’s war on Gaza, Serbia has sought to publicly avoid political involvement in the conflict, with Belgrade maintaining a relatively neutral position aimed at preserving relationships. As Israel’s war weighs heavily on them, many Palestinians do not feel joy this Eid but say they still have faith.Palestinians across the Gaza Strip are marking the end of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan with no respite from the Israeli military’s deadly attacks. On Wednesday, the starving population in the besieged enclave was doing its best to follow Eid al-Fitr traditions, but the reality of the war that has killed more than 33,300 Palestinians, mostly women and children, does not leave much room for celebration. “There is no joy or appetite for celebrating the holy occasion,” Ahmed Ismail,…

More than 60,000 Palestinians offered Eid al-Fitr prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem, but the atmosphere was subdued and not festive as people mourned the victims of Israel’s more than six-month war on the Gaza Strip. Large contingents of Israeli police officers were deployed at the entrances, surrounding areas and alleys of the city. Because police barred some people from entering the compound, they prayed instead at the mosque’s outer gates. While few people from the occupied West Bank were permitted to enter, the Islamic Endowments Department in Jerusalem said in a statement that more than 60,000 faithful…

Beijing says it is ‘disappointed’ with decision by US-based ratings agency.Fitch Ratings has downgraded China’s sovereign credit outlook to negative, prompting pushback from Beijing. The downgrade reflects “increasing risks to China’s public finance outlook” as the country attempts to move away from real estate-led growth, the New York-based ratings agency said on Wednesday. Fitch, one of the “big three” ratings agencies along with Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s, said it expected the government deficit to rise to 7.1 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2024, up from 5.8 percent last year.
