Amsterdam-based denim pattern maker Maria Gunnarsson of Amk Atelier has designed a capsule collection for Damson Madder, a London fashion brand. The clothing can be ordered from the Amk Atelier webshop as well as from Damson Madder. Gunnarsson informed FashionUnited.
The collection is inspired by and developed in collaboration with the female farmers of the Amsterdam community agricultural farm (CSA) De Stadsgroenteboer. Gunnarsson’s project ‘Rooted’, which concluded last year, explored what modern, fashionable workwear for women could look like.
That project was popular with the British; The collaboration stems from a meeting between Gunnarsson and Damson Madder at the Kingpins denim fair, during which their shared vision of functional, more sustainable clothing for women was discussed.
The line consists of four signature items named after the farmers Gunnarsson followed through the seasons in their workplace: the Lisa Dungarees, Julia Worker Jacket, Laura Zip-Off Pants and the Maria Hiking Bag. The clothing is made from organic cotton, which has been lightly processed (without heavy washing), with robust hardware and hang tags made from upcycled denim scraps from Damson Madder.
Gunnarsson also uses the project as a test case for moving away from traditional seasonal collections. The designer is committed to targeted, limited drops in her own studio and is currently working on the development of a men’s collection.
