Today, Monday, the Meteorology Authority announced that 142 earthquakes had been recorded inside the country.

The authority said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “The total number of earthquakes recorded in the Iraqi seismic monitoring network during the year 2023 is 311 earthquakes, whose strength ranged between (1-5.2) degrees, while their focal depths reached between (2) -34) km.
She continued, “The number of seismic events inside Iraq reached 142, while 115 earthquakes were recorded inside Iran, 29 were recorded in Turkey, 8 in Syria, 16 on the Iraqi-Iranian border, and 1 on the Iraqi-Turkish border,” explaining that “the activity was clearly concentrated in the regions.” North and northeast, specifically near the Iraqi-Iranian border strip in the areas south and southeast of Darbandikhan, east of Kalar/Sulaymaniyah, Khanaqin, Mandali/Diyala, Badra/Wasit district, Nineveh, Kirkuk, Dohuk, and Erbil, with earthquakes recorded in areas near and adjacent to Iraq, including Turkey, Iran, and Syria, with varying strength. From one region to another.”
She continued, “Sulaymaniyah Governorate topped the largest number of seismic events for the year 2023, reaching 31 earthquakes, then Diyala Governorate followed with (23) earthquakes, then Nineveh Governorate (20) earthquakes, then Maysan Governorate (14) earthquakes, while the Governorate
Kirkuk (13) earthquakes, followed by Dohuk Governorate (12) earthquakes, Erbil Governorate (11) earthquakes, then Wasit Governorate (9) earthquakes, followed by Basra Governorate with 4 earthquakes, then Salah al-Din Governorate 2, and finally the governorates of Baghdad, Anbar, and Diwaniyah, each with one earthquake.
