‘Multiple’ law enforcement officers were shot in Charlotte, North Carolina after an incident erupted, authorities said.
“Numerous law enforcement officers struck by gunfire in active situation in the 5000 block of Galway Drive,” the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said on Monday afternoon. A deputy US Marshal was killed, sources told WSOC-TV.
The Independent has not independently verified this information.
Police said that the “threat is isolated to the area” and asked residents in the neighborhood to shelter in place. “Expect major roads shut down in the area to expedite victim transport,” authorities noted. Local outlets reported that neighbours housing was being used by police for cover in the ensuing shootout.
Thirty minutes after the initial report, police wrote that the US Marshals Task Force, made up of officers from multiple agencies, “was conducting an investigation in the area …when they were engaged by active gunfire from a subject.” The police later explained that the Task Force had been ‘attempting to serve a warrant’ in the area when gunfire erupted.
It’s not immediately clear who fired shots at the officers or why.
The law enforcement officers are being taken to the hospital while the CMPD SWAT team is currently on the scene. Multiple victims transported to nearby hospitals. Gunfiire continues on scene. More information to come from CMPD’s Public Affairs Office.

Neighbours caught up in the incident, described the situation at “gunfire galore”. Tyler Wilson told WBTV officers had streamed into his home, including one who appeared to use his window to operate a sniper rifle.
At one point, Mr Wilson told the outlet, an injured officer had been dragged through his home by his shoulders, though he was able to see the extent of the officer’s injuries.
He described the scene as “gunfire galore,” with officers army-crawling through his backyard, hiding behind trees, and jumping around bushes.
Officers ordered Mr Wilson and two others in the home to hide in a back room as the gunfire was ongoing.
Following news of the unfolding incident, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper posted on X that he is in contact with law enforcement “concerning the tragic shooting” has offered state resources to help.
North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis also weighed in, “An attack in Charlotte on our brave law enforcement officers who swore an oath to protect and serve us all. Susan and I are praying for everyone’s safety.”
