Baqubah / Nina / Report by Anmar Abdel Sattar: The Umm al-Dajj area is one of the most prominent and famous old areas in the city of Baqubah, the center of Diyala Governorate.
Its founding dates back more than 150 years and it is known for the diversity of its population from different sects, nationalities and religions, including Arabs, Kurds, Muslims, Christians, Jews and Sabians.
The most important thing that distinguishes this area is that it represents the mosaic of society, and that all families formed a cohesive social unit. The symphony of life was played, and everyone danced an Iraqi dance.
Umm al-Dajjen includes one of the oldest mosques in Diyala, the Shabandar Mosque, which was built in 1879 by Hajj Ahmed Saeed al-Chalabi, and the city’s leading writers, scholars, and preachers studied there, led by Sheikh Safa al-Din al-Naqshbandi, Mahmoud al-Masri, and Abd al-Sattar al-Wis al-Samarrai.
What distinguishes it today is that it, along with other ancient areas, is considered a heritage area, but it is neglected, threatened with extinction, and does not receive governmental attention. It needs attention and care to transform it into a tourist attraction through which people will remember the beautiful past./ End
