Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the widest opening in UK and Ireland cinemas in an otherwise quiet weekend for new releases.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is being released in 714 cinemas as the fourth entry in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man series. The previous film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, opened in 2021 in 645 sites, grossing a huge £7.6m in its first day and £19.5m over the opening weekend. 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming opened with £9.4m while 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home opened with £14.2m.
According to Vue CEO Tim Richards, pre-sales have already surpassed the cinema chain’s biggest advance ticket sales of the year by more than 90%, with the company expecting more than 200,000 customers across the UK during the first 24 hours of release.
Brand New Day follows Peter Parker in a world that has forgotten him, where he faces an enigmatic and powerful new villain and simultaneously the pressure on him intensifies, sparking a physical transformation that threatens his whole existence. Further cast includes Zendaya, Mark Ruffalo, Sadie Sink and Jon Bernthal.
Destin Daniel Cretton directs his second Marvel feature after the success of Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings, which opened in 635 locations in September 2021 and topped the box office with £5.8m on opening weekend.
Brand New Day comes just two weeks after Universal’s The Odyssey, which also stars Holland and Zendaya, and was up to £35m after just 10 days.

Elsewhere this weekend, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit is showing at 220 sites in a re-release by Park Circus. Directed by Steve Box and Nick Park, the film follows Wallace and his loyal dog, Gromit, on a mission to find the beast sabotaging local gardens ahead of the town’s highly anticipated giant vegetable competition. The voice cast includes Peter Sallis, Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes and Peter Kay.
Imran Perreta’s Ish screens at 42 venues for BFI Distribution. Co-written by Perreta and Enda Walsh, the feature revolves around 12-year-old Ish and his best friend as they navigate grief and friendship. The film had its world premiere at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in 2025.
WHAM! 10 Days In China is showing in 30 venues over the weekend via Trafalgar Releasing following an initial launch across 300 locations on July 28. The film showcases restored footage revealing the story of the iconic tour that helped launch the pop duo to global superstardom.
Opening in 16 cinemas in a new re-release by Curzon is Andrei Tarkovsky’s Swedish-language drama The Sacrifice. Winner of the best foreign-language film Bafta in 1988, it follows a man searching for a way to restore peace at the dawn of World War Three, only to find he must pay a high price in return.
Personal Problems is being released in two venues by Other Parties. Bill Gunn’s 1980 film offers a look at a troubled marriage caught up in affairs and unwanted family drama, and stars Vertamae Smart-Grosvenor, Walter Cotton and Sam L. Waymon.
Further releases include Zee Studios’ latest Punjabi drama Kankaan De Ohle and Dreamz Entertainment’s romance Srinivasa Mangapuram.
