Al-Ettifaq censor Jordan Henderson’s rainbow armband in announcement video
The January transfer window has been slow to get going this month but may be starting to heat up as clubs try to bolster their squads for the second half of the season.
This month, Arsenal and Chelsea are expected to be two of the teams trying to bring in at least one player each, with Ivan Toney a name on both clubs’ wishlists. Brighton striker Evan Ferguson has also been linked with the Blues, although the Seagulls value the teenager at more than £100m. Given the strictness of financial fair play rules, any signings might depend on sales.
Kalvin Phillips is a wanted man with Newcastle United, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid all interested in the surplus Manchester City midfielder and Juventus also following the situation. Manchester United are set to keep Amad Diallo despite a flurry of loan exits from Old Trafford, Tottenham still want Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher, while the Blues are prepared to let Armando Broja leave – but only for a substantial fee of £50m.

Arsenal and Tottenham want Real Sociedad’s Ander Barrenetxea
North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham are both interested in signing the Real Sociedad winger Ander Barrenetxea, according to the Sun.
Barrenetxea is a Spanish U21 international who tends to play on the left side but can also fill in as a striker. He has made 22 appearances in La Liga, the Champions League and the Copa del Rey this season, scoring four times and registering two assists.
The 22-year-old has been scouted by both clubs, and it is thought Mikel Arteta sees him as providing good competition for Gabriel Martinelli on Arsenal’s left flank.

Troy Deeney sacked by Forest Green Rovers after just 29 days in charge
It was Deeney’s first managerial role after he joined the League Two side as a player-coach in the summer before being promoted to the top job following the sacking of Dave Horseman on the 20th of December.
When he took over the role, the club were already at risk of relegation from the football league following a run of just one win in seven matches, and under his tenure Rovers lost three and drew the other three of his games in charge.
However, Deeney faced criticism in the role, including when he publicly called out his players following their 2-0 defeat at home to Harrogate on Saturday.

Ivan Perisic’s time at Tottenham ends after joining Hajduk Split on loan
Tottenham have allowed injured winger Ivan Perisic to join Hajduk Split on loan for the rest of the season, which will bring his time at the club to an end.
Perisic sustained anterior cruciate ligament damage in September after appearing in Spurs’ first six matches of the new campaign under Ange Postecoglou.
The significant knee injury raised doubts over the prospect of Perisic featuring again for Tottenham with his deal set to expire this summer and an agreement has now been reached for the Croatia international to sign for Hajduk on loan.

Newcastle face big transfer decisions on Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson
Newcastle United are preparing themselves for a series of big decisions over the final 10 days of the January transfer window as suitors attempt to take advantage of their spending restrictions.
It is understood that the Magpies have rejected a loan offer from Bayern Munich for key defender Kieran Trippier and have received and rebuffed a similar approach from Atletico Madrid for striker Callum Wilson.
However, they are bracing themselves for follow-ups which could present the kind of dilemmas chief executive Darren Eales suggested might arise in the wake of the £400m-plus spending spree on which the club have embarked since their Saudi-backed owners took charge in October 2021 as a result of profit and sustainability rules.
Eales’ comments came earlier this month as Newcastle reported a loss after tax of £73.4m in their latest financial figures, after which he admitted that every player in Eddie Howe’s squad had their price as the club attempt to balance their books.

Liverpool have benefitted from their mini-winter break, says Jurgen Klopp
They returned to training on Wednesday – a week after their last game – and head to Bournemouth looking to extend their advantage at the top to five points.
While they will still be missing talisman Mohamed Salah, who is at the Africa Cup of Nations, and are waiting for the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson and Dominik Szoboszlai to return from injury, Klopp believes everyone benefited from a break from the intensity of the Premier League.
