The Ministry of Commerce announced the seizure of large quantities of smuggled food basket flour in the holy city of Karbala.
The Ministry of Trade’s media stated in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that “the inspection teams in the Commercial and Financial Control Department of the Ministry of Trade in Karbala Governorate, in coordination with the Organized Crime Directorate of the Ministry of Interior, were able to seize a bakery containing large quantities of flour designated for food basket items and not designated for sale.”
The Director General of the Department, Riyadh Mahdi Al-Moussawi, said, according to the statement, that “through coordination and joint cooperation with the security services in the field of monitoring commercial markets, the inspection teams were able to seize a bakery containing more than 95 bags of smuggled flour, each bag weighing 50 kg, with recent production dates and without purchase receipts, as it became clear that the seized quantities were produced for the purposes of the ration card.”
He added, “All the seized quantities were confiscated and legal measures were taken against the violators by the competent security agencies,” noting that “the inspection campaigns carried out by the Commercial Control Department in all governorates resulted in the discovery of many violations and transgressions against public funds by some merchants who tamper with citizens’ food, and deterrent measures were taken against them.”
