Baghdad / Nina / The meeting of the Executive Council of the Arab Towns Organization, in its sixty-first session, will begin today, Wednesday, in the capital, Baghdad, after an interruption of more than 35 years.
The Baghdad Municipality has completed all its preparations to host the two-day meeting, under the slogan (Resilient Cities… A Sustainable Future) under the auspices of Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani.
Iraq was one of the founding countries of this organization, which was established in 1967 and has its permanent headquarters in Kuwait City. It is linked to friendship, cooperation and partnership agreements with many Arab, regional and international organizations, bodies and federations, in addition to universities and institutes specialized in its fields of activity. It is also a member of the United Cities and Local Authorities Organization. It has observer status in the United Nations Economic and Social Council, the European Council, and other international and global organizations and bodies.
Among the organization’s goals are to preserve the identity and heritage of Arab cities, describe city problems, and search for solutions to them through programs and exchange of expertise and experiences, as well as enhancing growth indicators, securing residents’ necessities, contributing to enhancing the city’s role, making it attractive for living, and establishing flexible, comprehensive, safe, and sustainable cities.
The organization also aims to empower cities by developing a road map that achieves financial independence, in addition to working to build future cities with an aspiration for contemporary architecture without losing the identity and heritage Arab and Islamic roots, as well as striving to improve cultural life in Arab city communities./End 5
