The PGA Tour still has to wait for Tiger Woods’ 15-year-old son. In Thursday’s qualifying round, Charlie Woods shot 12 on one hole for an 86.
Woods didn’t make a birdie at Lost Lake Golf Club, one of four qualifiers for the Awareness Classic. About two dozen players from four venues will enter Monday’s qualifiers, with four players set to qualify for the PGA Tour.
Charlie Woods, who turned 15 earlier this month, has competed in the 36-hole PNC Championship in a scramble format with his father for the past four years.
Woods plays with Olin Browne Jr., who qualified for the U.S. Open last summer in Los Angeles. The son of three-time PGA Tour champion Olin Browne shot 72.
Woods ran into trouble early, making double bogey and double bogey on the par-5 fifth hole. But by the seventh hole, with water on the right and behind the green, the teen’s hopes were dashed for good. He scored 12 runs.
Woods shot 47, suffered two bogeys, and then a double bogey for an 86. He finished with a 65-stroke lead. Scores will not be updated until the player completes the game.
For players without Tour eligibility, the registration fee for the qualifiers is $250.
At age 16, Tiger Woods received a sponsor exemption to play his first PGA Tour event at the Nissan Open on the Riviera, having already won the U.S. The first of three consecutive Junior Amateur championships. He failed to advance with a score of 72-75.
