The Ministry of Trade confirmed, on Sunday, that the Local Product Protection Law allows local authorities to take preventive measures, while naming the body responsible for determining Iraq’s actual need for imported materials.
The official spokesman for the ministry, Mohammed Hanoun, said in an interview with the official agency, which was followed by Al-Rasheed, that “there is no absolute ban on the import of basic materials, but rather national decisions to protect local products according to the Local Product Protection Law, which allows local authorities to take preventive measures to protect local products, such as increasing customs duties on some imported materials that are produced locally. This is implemented in all countries to protect local products and limit the dumping policy.”
Hanoun added, “The import committee is the one that determines Iraq’s actual need for imported materials in order to support Iraqi goods and take all necessary measures to protect the national product.”
