The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group for several Iranian-backed militias in the country, said it attacked a number of targets along the Jordanian-Syrian border on Sunday – including a camp near the US base in Jordan where soldiers were killed.
Camp Rukban is located close to Tower 22, where the United States said three service members were killed in a drone attack.
The Islamic Resistance statement, which it published on its Telegram channel, came before the United States announced the killing of its soldiers.
The organization said that its forces launched drone attacks at dawn on Sunday as part of its efforts “to resist the American occupation forces in Iraq” and in response to “the massacres committed by Israel against our people in Gaza.”
The organization said that the attacks targeted four bases, three of which were in Syria.
What the United States said: US officials said the drone that killed US service members in Tower 22 was launched by Iranian-backed militants and appeared to be coming from Syria. The United States has not yet identified a specific militia that it holds responsible, and a US official told CNN on Sunday that the matter is still being determined.
More from Jordan: The Jordanian Minister of Communications said that the attack that led to the killing of the American soldiers targeted “an advanced location on the border with Syria” and that no Jordanian border guard forces were harmed. Muhannad Moubaideen described the attack as a “terrorist attack.” While Jordanian officials have condemned the Israeli campaign in Gaza, they have often expressed concern about the potential expansion of the war in the Middle East. Jordan is considered a major partner of the United States in the region and receives significant American aid.
