US President Joe Biden announced on Tuesday the extension of a decree imposing sanctions on Russia for another year on the grounds that it obstructed the holding of free and fair democratic elections and undermined democratic institutions in the United States.
The White House stated that the decree is related to the “malicious activities” that Washington accuses Moscow of practicing.
Washington accuses Russia of “obstructing democratic and free elections and undermining democratic institutions in the United States and its allies and partners.”
The decree also accuses Russia of “violating the principles of international law and the territorial integrity of states.”
The US President said in a statement: “For this reason, the (punitive) state of emergency declared under Executive Order No. 14024 must remain in effect for another year after April 15, 2024.”
It is noteworthy that Western countries, including the G7 countries and the European Union, imposed sanctions on Russia against the backdrop of its military operation in Ukraine, which began in February 2022.
Russian assets worth about $300 billion were frozen. Of these, there are about 200 billion euros in the European Union, most of them in Belgian Euroclear accounts – one of the largest settlement and clearing systems in the world.
