The US representative to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, announced that her country had distributed to members of the UN Security Council a new draft resolution on the Gaza Strip.
“We distributed a new draft resolution that absolutely supports diplomatic efforts to declare a truce for 6 weeks with the release of all hostages,” Thomas-Greenfield explained to reporters on Wednesday.
She added that the document aims to “support the ongoing negotiations on the ground.”
This comes against the backdrop of continuing negotiations in Cairo mediated by the United States, Egypt and Qatar regarding a ceasefire in Gaza and the exchange of detainees between Israel and the Hamas movement.
The United States had previously used its veto power in the UN Security Council against all draft resolutions that provided for a permanent and immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
