Today, Friday, the Sudanese Foreign Ministry announced four conditions for a ceasefire during the month of Ramadan, in response to the appeal of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, to stop hostilities in the country.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry stressed the necessity of rapid withdrawal of support from the states of Al-Jazira and Sennar and all the cities that were attacked after the signing of the Declaration of Humanitarian Principles on May 11, 2023, such as Nyala, Al-Jeneina, Zalingei, and Al-Daein, and then to gather its forces in an agreed-upon location, according to the text of the statement.
She pointed out the need to stop the atrocities and violations of international humanitarian law and human rights law committed by the Rapid Support Forces in the various states that attacked them, including the states of Darfur, Al-Jazira, Sennar, and White Nile. South Kordofan and West Kordofan, in addition to returning public and private looted goods and holding accountable the perpetrators of acts of destruction that affected public facilities and citizens’ property, according to the statement.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed that the Government of Sudan welcomed Guterres’ appeal to stop fighting in Ramadan, explaining that it “reminds of similar previous experiences, when the armed forces responded to a similar appeal from Guterres last Ramadan, and also committed to the humanitarian truces that were approved through the Jeddah platform, but the Rapid Support Militia The terrorist organization took advantage of these repeated truces to supply weapons, strengthen its military position, and occupy more citizens’ homes, hospitals, mosques, churches, and civilian objects. As a result, these truces deepened the humanitarian crisis in the country and enabled the militia to commit the greatest atrocities and violations. Therefore, in order for the recent call of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to achieve its results What is desired is not a repetition of those failed experiments, the following objective conditions must be met:
1. The militia implemented its obligations through the Jeddah platform by leaving its members from citizens’ homes, public facilities, and civilian objects.
2. The militia’s withdrawal from the states of Jazira and Sennar and all the cities it attacked after signing the Declaration of Humanitarian Principles on May 11, 2023, such as Nyala, El Geneina, Zalingei, and El Daein, and then gathering its forces in an agreed-upon location.
3. Stop the atrocities and violations of international humanitarian law and human rights law committed by the militia in the various states that attacked it, including the states of Darfur, Al-Jazira, Sennar, and White Nile. South Kordofan and West Kordofan.
4. Return looted public and private goods and hold accountable the perpetrators of acts of destruction that affected public facilities and citizens’ property.”
The Sudanese Foreign Ministry continued: “After the war stops, the necessary political arrangements will be made after broad consultations with all national forces to manage the transitional period followed by holding general elections for the people to choose who will rule them.”
She added: “We are certain that the terrorist militia, which launched its war on the state and the citizen during the holy month of Ramadan last year, is devoid of any religious, moral or national scruples and cannot therefore respect the sanctity of the Holy Month.”
