The Prime Minister’s Media Office said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani chaired, in Basra Governorate, a special meeting on the seawater desalination project, in the presence of the Al-Rida Group coalition, Power China Company, which is implementing the project, the Governor of Basra, and advisors to the Prime Minister. Ministers.
He added, “During the meeting, the coalition reviewed its plan for this important project for Basra, which the government adopted from the beginning of its formation and included it in the government program and the federal budget, and transferred it from the Ministry of Construction and Housing to Basra Governorate, in accordance with Cabinet Resolution (23425) at its session held in August 1, 2023.”
According to the statement, the Prime Minister was briefed on “the final stages of the negotiation and the findings of the committee headed by the Governor of Basra with the coalition implementing the project, stressing the reduction of the completion period.”
He directed, “to resolve the issue and submit the minutes of the meeting to the government so that the Council of Ministers can take the appropriate decision, ensuring that obstacles are overcome and the completion of the project expedited.”
It is noteworthy that this project will be the largest in the world among the rest of the projects for seawater desalination, as it will operate with a capacity of one million cubic meters per day, sufficient to meet the needs of 3-4 million people of Basra. The project also includes the establishment of an electric power generation station, as part of the project. ; To ensure its independence from external energy sources.
