The President of Hungary, Katalin Novak, announced her resignation from office, admitting that she had made a mistake, in April 2023, when she pardoned a former employee of an orphanage, convicted of covering up incidents of sexual assault against children, committed by the director of the orphanage.

Novak said, on the Hungarian M1 channel: “Today I address you for the last time as head of state. I submit my resignation from the position of President of the Republic.”
Following Novak’s announcement of her resignation, former Justice Minister Judit Varga announced her resignation from membership in the Hungarian Parliament and her withdrawal from running for membership in the European Parliament.
