On Saturday, the President of Hungary, Katalin Novak, announced her resignation from her position, justifying this by saying that she “made a mistake” when she pardoned a man convicted of “child sexual assault.”
Katalin Novak said she would resign because she “made a mistake” in April 2023 when she pardoned a man convicted as an accomplice in a “child sexual assault” case.
Novak explained to M1 TV channel, saying: “Today I address you for the last time as head of state. I will resign from my position as president of the republic.”
Katalin Novak faced increasing pressure to resign after it was revealed that she had “granted a presidential pardon to a man convicted as an accomplice in a child sexual assault case.”
Novak pardoned the former deputy director of the state-run children’s home who was sentenced to prison for “covering up sexual assault by the institution’s director.”
Opposition parties say that “President Katalin Novak is no longer fit to hold office after she issued that pardon.”
The man was sentenced to more than three years in prison in 2018 on charges of helping to cover up sexual assaults committed by the director of the institution, who was sentenced to eight years in prison on charges of assaulting at least 10 children between 2004 and 2016.
