EXCLUSIVE: After receiving some of the best reviews of his career on The Odyssey, John Leguizamo and Matt Damon are ready for their next big voyage as sources tell Deadline Leguizamo is in negotiations to join Damon in the untitled event project from filmmaking duo Daniels. Daniels, aka Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, will write and direct. Sandra Oh, Sean Kaufman, Michael Gandolfini and Charles Melton are also on board.
Universal had no comment on the casting.
Details on the project remain under wraps. Kwan, Scheinert and Jonathan Wang will produce through their company Playgrounds’ overall deal with Universal. Playgrounds’ Kwan and Wang recently produced The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist from Universal’s specialty studio Focus Features. It bowed in March.
Executive VP Production Development Sara Scott and Director of Production Development Jacqueline Garell will oversee the Daniels’ new project for Universal.
The timing couldn’t be more perfect as Daniels were looking for that last critical role in the film just as The Odyssey was blowing away audiences across the world. Leguizamo’s scene-stealing performance was all it took to get the Daniels sign off and an offer for that last big role in the film that starts shooting later this year.
Leguizamo and Universal look to continue their run of big hits as he also recently shot the upcoming Exorcist movie starring Scarlett Johansson. He also can be seen next in Bullet Catch. He is repped by UTA, Mosaic and Jackoway Austen Terman.
