What a treat it is to exist at the same time as Ludwig Göransson. The legendary composer has been behind some of the most jaw-dropping scores of recent years. Fresh from last year’s astonishing Sinners soundtrack (for which he won his second Oscar, the other for Oppenheimer), he’s already given us the gift of his Mandalorian And Grogu soundtrack this year, boasting an instant banger in the synth-heavy ‘Shakari’. And soon we’ll get his latest collaboration with Christopher Nolan: The Odyssey. As you’d expect, they’re cooking up something wild – take a look here:
Well, that sounds incredible. Göransson is going back to Ancient Greek instruments like the aulos and the lyre – and cross-referencing them against Ancient Greek artefacts to check their authenticity – in creating his latest soundscape. And banging big bronze gongs to channel that ‘Bronze Age’ feeling (see Nolan himself giving it a go in the featurette, standing next to cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema). Chuck electronic musician James Blake in there, and we’re in for something truly wild. Could this make for the composer’s third Best Score win at the Oscars?
The Odyssey will be Göransson’s third time working with Nolan, their first project together being Tenet. Hopefully it’ll be another banger – we’ll find out when The Odyssey hits cinemas on July 17, just over a month away.
