Plasschaert said in a periodic briefing before the Security Council, and the Iraqi News Agency (INA) followed it: “The local elections were held peacefully on a large scale and in a technically sound manner, and this represented another milestone in the government’s efforts to get out of previous episodes of shortcomings,” expressing her hope. “The re-establishment of local representative bodies marks another major step forward.”
She added, “Reforms and development are necessary to open the horizons for a brighter future for all Iraqis, and this is what the government is working on, a future in which young people can benefit from their skills and abilities to improve their lives and their communities.”
She stated that “the need for sustainable progress, towards real reform, and improving living standards must not decline, as the population of Iraq grows every year, and the government’s plans represent the key to meeting these needs.”
Plasschaert concluded her speech by saying, “In December 2018 I arrived in Baghdad, and now, after five years, it is almost time to say goodbye, and I expect to leave my position at the end of May, but it is not easy, because Iraq has simply become a part of me.”
Plasschaert praised “all Iraqi men and women for their sacrifices, strength, and deep commitment to building a prosperous, democratic, and peaceful Iraq.”
